'sitting chairs' by lucas maassen is one of the many designs featured in the museum of modern art's exhibit, 'design and the elastic mind'. the project brings the simple form of the chair to life through subtle additions. small human characteristics such as feet or a kneeling chair add a touch of whimsy to the otherwise mundane forms. long time designboom readers may notice that the 'sitting chairs' bare a striking resemblance to an entry in our 2005 teenage furniture design competition. the entry actually belongs to maassen, who created a variation on the 'sitting chairs' specifically for teenagers.

"The pieces of furniture are the main characters in this tableau vivant" explains Maassen. "The chairs become dependent on each other and their environment, which they interact with and exist with in numerous ways, creating all sorts of different situations." Sitting Chairs is an example of a new direction for designers, working on families of objects rather than on stand-alone projects.
